It seems that the biggest thing Konami is looking to do to celebrate Metal Gear turning 35 is to resume the sales of “titles that have been temporarily suspended.” While Konami wasn’t exactly specific with what titles would be returning, fans have assumed that this recent tweet means Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will once again be available to play. This would likely mean that the licensing issues that caused Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 to be pulled from storefronts have ended.

It was assumed that this issue would be a temporary one, but that didn’t stop fans from being worried that they would no longer be able to play some of their favorite Metal Gear Solid titles. Initially, all versions of both games were removed from digital storefronts back in November 2021, meaning that an eight-month wait is likely over for players. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are fondly remembered by fans of the franchise, with both games being seen as some of the best the series has to offer.

While many will be happy to see sales of these games are resuming, it isn’t currently known when they will be purchasable from online storefronts again. At one time, there were rumors of a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, which many fans would likely welcome considering the last version of the game was released in 2011. With news on that going quiet, and Konami only confirming older versions of the game will be purchasable, it seems there may be a long wait still before fans see a remake of that game.

Many, though, are glad that Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 won’t likely be disappearing from digital storefronts forever. While the fear of this may seem a stretch, given Ubisoft’s recent removal of online services for many of its games, a lot of gamers are currently worried about the future of video game preservation.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released for PlayStation 2, original Xbox and Windows back in 2001. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was released for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2004.
